Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a new economic relief package for victims of the storms that killed more than 220 people in the country’s worst natural disaster in more than six decades.

It was reportedly the largest protest march in Valencia’s history, mobilizing a large portion of the metropolitan area’s 2.5 million inhabitants.

Protestors were demanding the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón, accusing him of mismanagement which led to deadly toll taken by the disaster.

Demonstrators, who packed Valencia's city centre, called for the resignation of regional leader Carlos Mazon, chanting “Killers!” Banners carried messages like “Our hands are stained with mud, yours with blood,” and some protesters left muddy boots outside the government building, while others smeared it with mud.

The army sent a total of about 7,500 soldiers over the weekend to help distribute food and water, clean up streets and guard against looters.
